TCU gets kicked out of the Top 25 after losing to SMU 41-38

After steam rolling over Purdue the week before, which vaulted the Horned Frogs in the the top 25, TCU lost the battle for the Iron Skillet.

SMU, which in recent history had be manhandled by TCU, won a close game in Amon G. Carter Stadium. The last time SMU won this rivalry was in 2011 in overtime. The Mustangs are now 4-0 for the first time since 1984.

While there were some misreads and bad executing on the Horned Frogs’ part, head coach Gary Patterson said “they out coached us and they out played us” overall.

“It’s hard. It’s a tough loss,” TCU running back Darius Anderson said. “We’ve got execute, do our job, make less mistakes.”

This was a theme throughout the game and it was apparent as SMU was up 15-0 within 10 minutes of the first quarter. TCU played catch up the rest of game.

TCU’s defense, which is known for being the most solid defense in the Big 12, was decimated for 406 yards and five touchdowns by the Mustangs. Patterson called his team “young” and said it showed up in the way they performed against SMU.

Patterson also emphasized its more about what the Mustangs  did then what the Horned Frogs  did not do.

“You should give SMU all the credit,” Patterson said. “They out played our guys.”

Even though Patterson said “there is no sliver lining,” TCU showed some ability to fight against adversity as they won the second half 21-10. One could argue if there was more time, the outcome possibly could have been different.

“Our young team learned a valuable lesson,” TCU’s head coach said. TCU will stay home next week to begin Big 12 conference play against Kansas.
